Why should I register a
domain name?
A domain name will give you a
unique identity on the Internet. In some ways, a
domain name is similar to a customized license plate.
Many organization find it useful to have an e-mail or
Web address that is similar to their company name or
to their company product(s).
If your organization's name is
Example, Inc., you could register the domain name
EXAMPLE.COM and your e-mail address could be
user_name@example.com. Your customers would also be
able to access your organization's Web site by
visiting "www.example.com" with their Web
browser.

What is the InterNic
All domain names are registered
through the InterNIC, which is a collaboration between
the National Science Foundation, AT&T, and
Network Solutions, Inc. The National Science
Foundation provides funding for AT&T to handle the
Directory and Database Services and Network Solutions
to assign, record, and track internet addresses for
domain names. Your domain name application will be
submitted to Network Solutions for
approval.
The InterNIC database of domain names
is like a master telephone directory for the internet.
Whenever a domain name is typed into a web browser, it
is looked up in the InterNIC database which then tells
the browser where that web page is on the
internet.
In order to offset the costs of
maintaining this immense database, the InterNIC
charges each person who owns a domain name. When you initially register a domain name you
can pay for 1 years up front, or $20. These
fees must be paid by everyone who owns a domain
name.

What are the valid characters for a domain
name and how long can it
be?
The only valid characters for a
domain name are letters, numbers and a hyphen. Special
characters like the underscore (_) or an exclamation
mark (!) are NOT permitted. Domain names cannot
contain spaces or begin or end with a hyphen.
A domain name can be up to 26
characters long including the 4 characters used to
identify the Top Level Domain (.NET, .COM, .ORG, or
.EDU).
Examples:
 |
example.com is a valid
domain name (11 characters) |
 |
http://www.example.com is
not a domain name, it is a uniform resource
locator (URL) used by Web browsers to find
documents and resources |
 |
www.example.com is not
a domain name, www is the name of one
computer in the example.com domain

How can I determine whether the
name I want is
available?
You should use WHOIS
to research the domain name you'd like to register. If
the second-level domain name (example.com NOT
www.example.com) you want is already in Network
Solutions' database, your WHOIS query will return a
listing including information about the organization
who holds the name, the name servers, and the contacts
responsible for administering it.
The
possibility exists that a name is already registered,
even when a name shows available. This is
because of the time lag between registrations and
updates to the rootservers. Do not wait when you
have a good name.

How long will it take to process my
registration?
The process of registering a
domain name is coordinated through an automated
process called an "auto-parser." Once we have
have submitted a complete and correctly formatted
Agreement, your registration request will be processed
immediately and you will be notified via e-mail when
processing is complete. This generally takes less than
24 hours - with some requests processed in as little
as 10 minutes. The time of the last update to the
WHOIS database will be noted on the search results
page.
Following the registration,
updates to the Internet's root name servers are
propagated seven days a week at which time the DNS
information for the newly registered name becomes
visible to the DNS system. Domain names processed
prior to 7 p.m. Eastern Time should be accessible on
the Internet the next day assuming that the
nameservers listed in the WHOIS database for that
domain have the appropriate DNS records.
InterNIC only controls the domain
registration and root zone server updates.
Unfortunately, it may take some time for domain name
updates to propagate throughout the millions of
machines on the Internet.

]
How do I determine the status of
my domain name
registration?
Go to the WHOIS
database and type in the domain name you
registered. If processing is complete, your query will
return your domain name record. If you receive the
message: No match for ... , you should
check the next day.
The registration of a new
domain name is typically processed within 24
hours. Upon completion of the domain name
registration, the requestor and technical contact for
the primary name server will receive notification from
Network Solutions, Inc. Generally new domain name
records appear in the WHOIS database within 24 hours
after the Domain Name Registration Agreement has been
processed.
It is possible that your domain
name will be visible in the WHOIS database before your
name is visible on the Internet. For your name to be
visible on the Internet, information about your domain
name has to be added to the Internet's zone files, a
global database of information about domain names that
is updated 7 days a week. All registrations completed
before 7:00 p.m. ET will be included in the root
server update. The root zone files are updated 7 days
a week. These new domain name records will be visible
in the WHOIS database the following day.
